 This system is only limited by your imagination. 

I worked my way around this issue by using a small Mackey mixing board, running it into channel 1, solving the mixer inconvenience issue. I've used this format successfully in 5 piece band situations, running the kick drum mic into channel 2 and using the EQ built in for kick drum mic, while running everything else through the 8 channel mixing board. Worked great in small rooms, medium rooms and small outside venues. For bigger gigs, I use two complete L-1 systems w/4 bass speakers. Sounds great, less filling.

Also, regarding the super clean sound.... this system efficiently reproduces the input signals. Therefore, when test driving Brian Purdy's HarpGear amp, we ran a direct line out of the amp and into the BOSE and then muffled completely the amp speaker. The sound through the BOSE was identical to that from the amp - crunchy, slightly distorted, huge, etc, and it FILLED the environment effortlessly.

I have used a Bose L1 Model 1. The mixer is in the base of the speaker; a VERY 
inconvenient location that hindered operation. The Bose remote control helped, 
but only controlled two of four input channels. Sounded very good in a low 
volume, small room situation. Pricey.
